Naumburg Cathedral is permanently open to visitors again. Guided tours for travel groups are also taking place again. Please bring a list of all participants with name, address and telephone number to the tour.

 

Tour groups can plan their visit to Naumburg Cathedral to meet their needs and interests. In a range of guided tours, we show you the 1,000-year cultural history of the cathedral, our most delicate treasures and other views. Our visitor centre will be happy to offer advice and put together a traditional or completely customised tour schedule for you.

The traditional cathedral tour: Word Heritage Masterpiece

We will show you the architectural and historical artistic features of our world heritage site. Learn about the exciting background behind the building’s history – from the Romanesque crypt via the highly-detailed handrails by Heinrich Apel to the modern glass windows designed by Neo Rauch. The tour focuses on the works of the Naumburg Master who turned the Cathedral into a piece of cultural heritage. Naturally, visitors will come face to face with Margravine Uta, the most beautiful woman of the middle ages, with whom the Italian writer Umberto Eco said he would love to have spent an evening.

Tour of the cathedral and its treasures: From works of art to legends of saints

The Cathedral Treasury Vault, one of the largest Romanesque vaults in central Germany, houses the cathedral’s sacred relics. Once you have discovered the cathedral’s unique architecture, the beauty of the donor statues, windows and choirs, we take you on a tour of this extraordinary chamber of treasures. Stories and legends are entwined with the works of art and saints on display and reveal many astonishing things from the medieval period. What was the original purpose of the Mary Magdalene altar created by Lucas Cranach the Elder or the "Naumburg Johannesschüssel"? In the 16th century, did a statue of the Madonna really put out a fire in the cathedral and thus save the statues of its donors? Each work of art reveals a new chapter in the cathedral’s varied history.

Tour of cathedral and exhibition: The Naumburg Master’s Career and Works

The exhibition provides the perfect complement to a traditional cathedral tour. After viewing the original pieces in the cathedral, skillful reproductions and animations show the route taken by the unnamed but renowned creator of the West Choir and the West Choir Screen. But where did the Naumburg Master come from and where did he learn his trade? How did he manage to breathe such life into a block of stone? Many questions can be answered in the exhibition where you can discover the particular features of his craftmanship.

Tour of the cathedral and its garden: The Naumburg Master and his garden

Arranged over an area measuring almost a hectare, the scenic cathedral garden links together the old pond systems and gardens of the former canon houses. Walking through the outer garden with its enchanted tower house and the kitchen and vegetable gardens the range of indigenous plants creates quite an impression. Back in the 13th century they provided the inspiration for the more than 150 artistic capitals, friezes and cap stones inside the cathedral. The Naumburg Master’s Garden is the best place to witness the interplay between art and nature following a tour of the cathedral.

Cathedral and tower climb: Change your perspective. Masterworks from near and far

The four towers of Naumburg Cathedral dominate the city skyline and are visible from far and wide. Once you have discovered the masterpieces inside the cathedral, climb to the viewing platform of the 52 metre-high northwest tower. Pass the roof framework with its enormous roof and vault construction on your way up to the historic belfry. The tour takes you past the three large bells from the 16th century and right up to the top of the tower. The reward for your exertions is an unparalleled view over the city of Naumburg and the Saale-Unstrut region.

Tour of the cathedral and its garden with wine tasting: From the grape to the glass

Please note that this guided tour is in German only. Wine and art – a delightful combination, particularly in the wine region of Saale-Unstrut. The highly-detailed decorations on the foliate capitals by the Naumburg Master tell us a lot about the development of the cultural landscape and the significance of wine. Following a tour of the structural highlights of the cathedral, we would like to invite you into the garden to wow you with the most exquisite wines from the Saale-Unstrut region and reveal everything worth knowing about winemaking in the high middle ages. Enjoy what our present-day winemakers have to offer among incomparable surroundings.

Tour by torchlight: Immerse yourself in the Romanesque

Please note that this guided tour is in German only. Through light and dark, sound and silence, hot and cold, we lead you back into the Romanesque period. Once the doors of the cathedral have shut, descend with us down into the candle-lit crypt and marvel at the Romanesque crucifix which has stood witness since the time the cathedral was first built in 1170. Accompanied by the sounds of liturgy from times past and lit only by torches the tour leads on to the East Choir. Through the normally-closed choir screen doors you enter the main body of the cathedral whose size looks even more impressive in the sparse light. Experience the impressive Romanesque ornamentation and revel in many details that go unnoticed during the true light of day.

Tour of the Cathedral Chapter Archive and Library: The hidden texts

Naumburg Cathedral looks back over nearly 1,000 years of fascinating history. Testimony to this history is provided by the more than 30,000 precious manuscripts and 2,500 deeds in the archive and library. The medieval historian and head of the cathedral chapter archive Matthias Ludwig opens up the artfully refurbished library rooms in the west cloister and reveals the extraordinary stories behind the documents. You will get a fascinating insight into the significance that medieval documents still hold for science today.

Legends of the towers and chapels: Christmas whispers

Please note that this guided tour is in German only. As the scene of a number of significant historical events, the cathedral also has a few legends to tell. On a tour held exclusively over the Christmas season, we share with you the cathedral’s secret anecdotes and tales of fantasy. Whether in the baptism chapel, evangelists chapel or the chapel of St Elizabeth – all are abound with exciting and mysterious stories. At the original locations, discover and experience details of the rumours that have surrounded the cathedral, its towers and chapels for centuries…

Christmas and New Year experience tour: The Three Kings and the Star of Bethlehem

Please note that this guided tour is in German only. Once upon a time, the three kings followed the star of Bethlehem to witness the miracle of the birth of Jesus and present their gifts – gold, frankincense and myrrh. Follow in their footsteps in this special tour: Journey to Naumburg Cathedral under the star! You will be astonished to discover how often the world-renowned Christmas story of Jesus, Mary and the wise men from the east is concealed on altars, windows and paintings and how the way it is presented has changed over the course of time.
