THE NAUMBURG CATHEDRAL CEMETERY

In the midst of the city of Naumburg, you can experience peace and contemplation at the cathedral cemetery. Its appearance is rustic, with gravesites that are largely overgrown. Here and there, however, lovingly placed figures and ornaments can be discovered.

Numerous Naumburg canons and cathedral preachers were buried here (16th-20th centuries), after that only prominent personalities such as the cathedral deans. After decades of slumber, the burial of the former canon and provost Waldemar Schewe in 2016 set a new beginning for the revival of this idyllic site.

Chapel of St. John - an architectural treasure

The Chapel of St. John in the Cathedral Cemetery (13th century) was built by a master builder trained on the French Gothic style. The interior shows a vault in three bays with ornate keystones and foliage capitals. The former keystone of the chapel, today to be seen in the cloister of Naumburg Cathedral and mounted as a copy above the entrance to the chapel, shows a bust portrait of John the Baptist with sacrificial lamb. Since 1864, the Chapel of St. John has stood in the Naumburg Cathedral cemetery.

The colorful glass windows were designed in 2014 by the artist David Schnell and realized together with Derix Glasstudios Taunusstein. Thanks to the kind consideration of the artist and the gallery EIGEN + ART Leipzig/Berlin as well as a generous donation from Freyburg, the windows can remain in the chapel.
