Cathedral Church of St Mary

Crossing the wooden portal to the Cathedral Church of St Mary, you find yourself in a wonderfully plain room at the end of the cloister. Your eye is caught immediately by the Gothic choir (14th century) at the apex of which a stone retable from the 14th adorns the altar.

Bearing a close relationship to the donor statues in the cathedral’s West Choir, the statue of the Mother of God from the octagonal chapel of Meissen Cathedral (in this case a copy in the original size) creates quite an impression.

Use as varied as life

Used as far back as the 12th century as a parish church, St Mary’s today provides a wide range of functions: a heated church for the Cathedral congregation to use in winter, or as a venue for conferences, meetings or talks. It also offers plenty of room for concerts, providing an opportunity to hear the Italian Eule organ on the gallery.
