Anniversary celebration: 5 years UNESCO World Heritage Site Naumburg Cathedral

Naumburg Cathedral is one of the most beautiful and important churches of the High Middle Ages. On July 1, 2018, the cathedral was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a masterpiece of human creativity and a special intersection of the European transfer of knowledge.

The World Heritage Committee recognized the artistic qualities of the cathedral, which provide insight into the art, architecture and technology of the 13th century. The west choir, created by the so-called Naumburg Master, was particularly impressive for its integration of architecture, sculptures and stained glass.

In 2023, Naumburg Cathedral will therefore be celebrating the 5th anniversary of its UNESCO World Heritage status. This will be celebrated on Saturday, July 1. Guests can look forward to a colorful program of festivities, including special tours, hands-on activities in the KinderDomBauhütte, a reading by Helene Grass from her father's work "Figurenstehen" and many other cultural and culinary offerings in the cathedral ensemble.

Cathedral tour with the Naumburg Master and founder figure Uta
The Naumburg Master and his donor figure, Margravine Uta, will personally welcome guests to the Naumburg Cathedral World Heritage Site on July 1 and take all tour participants on a journey into the world of the Middle Ages. They will also explain what Uta's crown is all about and what brought the Naumburg Master to Naumburg.

Tower tour
They dominate the silhouette of the city and are visible from afar - the four towers of Naumburg Cathedral. During the guided tour of the towers, you will go to the viewing platform of the north-west tower at a height of 52 meters, reach the roof truss with its enormous roof and vault construction, and finally the historic bell ringing. Past the three large bells from the 16th century, the tour leads to the top of the tower. The fantastic view over the world heritage site, the city as well as the wine region Saale-Unstrut is the reward for a strenuous climb. Prerequisite for the tower tour are sturdy shoes and height fitness. The tower climb is only suitable for children over 6 years.

"The Scriptures in Hiding"
Guided tour through the cathedral monastery archive and library
Naumburg Cathedral looks back on a fascinating history of almost 1000 years. The more than 30,000 precious manuscripts and 2,500 documents in the archive and library holdings also bear witness to this. The medieval historian and head of the cathedral archives, Dr. Matthias Ludwig, will open the library rooms of the Westklausur for you and reveal what surprising stories the documents conceal. At the same time, it will become clear what great importance the medieval manuscripts still hold for science today.
