Available both during the school day and also for after-school clubs, the KinderDomBauhütte (children’s construction workshop) introduces children and young persons to the fascinating world of a construction workshop in the 13th century. The children get a chance to slip into the role of a stone mason, glazier or master builder and embark on an exciting search for clues in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each project is linked to discovering Naumburg Cathedral and includes a creative element in the children’s construction workshop, where individual masterpieces can be produced. Children discover how art, architecture and religion came together in the middle ages in a vivid and entertaining experience.
The wide range of projects offered are adapted to the frameworks of the syllabus and can be tailored to groups of all ages. There are any many opportunities to link activities to a range of subjects including history, RE, art, biology, maths and special topics.

A kaleidescope of multicolour
Patience is a virtue - that must have been what the glassmakers who created the mosaic window in the baptism chapel thought. The stunning 1.7-metre-high piece of art is made up of hundreds of tiny pieces of coloured glass. The motto here is: eyes up and ears pricked! There is an exciting story behind the window and all will be revealed. Inspired by the splendour of the glasswork the children then build their own small glass mosaic using pieces of coloured glass.

Dress up like the donors
Uta and Ekkehard, Hermann and Reglindis – these are four of the people depicted by the famous statues of the cathedral’s donors in its West Choir. We take a magnifying glass to all twelve of these statues to take a closer look. What do they tell us about the time in which they lived? What makes them stand out in terms of their clothing, posture or even their jewellery? With a piece of magical film and a little creativity it is easy to make our own showpiece using the example of the donors’ jewellery.

I wonder what the founders are up to.
Uta und Ekkehard, Hermann und Reglindis – sie sind die berühmten Stifterpaare und gehören zu den 12 steinernen Figuren im Naumburger Westchor. Wir schauen uns ihre Geschichte einmal genauer an. Besonders die Männer haben große Schilder mit reichen Verzierungen dabei. Was erzählen sie uns über die Zeit, in der sie lebten? Anschließend gestalten die Kinder ihr eigenes Schild in der KinderDomBauhütte.

Let there be light. Creative candlemaking
Candlelight creates a warm and cosy atmosphere. But what significance did light hold in the middle ages? Why are candles still lit in church today? The children investigate these questions while exploring the cathedral. Afterwards, they make their own individual candles using a range of construction techniques.

Altar atelier. Cranach vs. Modernism
Mit der Rückkehr des Marienaltars in den Westchor des Naumburger Doms wollen wir in die Fußstapfen des Künstlers Michael Triegel treten. Nach seinem Vorbild kreiert ihr einen eigenen Mittelteil, um den berühmten Cranach-Altar zu ergänzen. Außerdem erfahrt ihr, was ein Altar ist und welche Bedeutung den Heiligen zukommt.

A piece of the garden to take away
Warum sich nicht mal einen eigenen kleinen Domgarten mit nach Hause nehmen? Doch bevor es ans Säen und Verzieren des „kleinen Domgartens“ geht, stehen erst einmal ein paar Nachforschungen und eine Tour durch den Kräutergarten des Doms an. Also raus ins Grüne! Mal schauen, wo Salbei, Kamille oder Ringelblume wachsen und wozu diese Kräuter im Mittelalter dienten und auch heute noch Verwendung finden.

Während der Erkundung der Naumburger Domstiftsbibliothek können die Schüler die über 30.000 kostbaren mittelalterlichen Handschriften bestaunen. Im Anschluss daran gestalten alle ein persönliches Lesezeichen aus echtem Blankleder. Hierfür stehen verschieden geformte Punziereisen zur Verfügung, die individuell kombiniert werden können.

Geheimnisse des Pergaments
During the middle ages, text was predominantly written on parchment. This writing material was made from animal skin and was highly valuable. Only certain texts were written on it, primarily those of a religious nature. In the cathedral, children can discover even more about medieval parchment. We show which secrets the parchment preserves and explain the demanding production process. After this, we will bind our own booklets with each child designing their own one. This also gives them the opportunity to try writing with a genuine goose feather.

The Three Kings and the Star of Bethlehem
Die Geschichte der Heiligen Drei Könige ist wohl die bekannteste Weihnachtsgeschichte überhaupt und wird auf verschiedenen Altären, Gemälden und Fenstern im Naumburger Dom abgebildet. Doch wird diese Geschichte überall gleich erzählt? Um das herauszufinden, treten die Kinder in die Fußstapfen der Heiligen Drei Könige und begeben sich auf Sternensuche im Dom und um ihn herum. Anschließend fertigt sich jedes Kind als Erinnerung einen eigenen leuchtenden Weihnachtsstern aus Transparentpapier.

Up, up and away. Discover the cathedral’s towers
Over 200 steps have to be climbed to reach the top of the north-west tower of the cathedral. But that's not all! Before the fantastic view makes up for any effort, the towers have to be measured and small tasks solved. At the end of the project, the brave "high-altitude hikers" are awarded a tower diploma.
